Interracial Relationships & The College Campus
Society teaches us to be accepting of other races, cultures, and religions. We should treat each other equally and with respect. The university I attend is known for its diversity. Society preaches about how diversity is great because there can be an intermingling of ideas and beliefs that will make everyone more open minded or knowledgeable. With that being said, some people are enjoy having a diverse group of friends but would never date them. A common reason is the race issue. I don't think there is anything wrong with dating outside your race. The color of your skin should not matter as long as you enjoy each other's company, but there still seems to be a stigma against it. Mom grapples with mixed-race dating
While I’m away, readers give the advice. On dating outside your race: I never considered myself a racist, and I promise you many of my friends are of just about every race and color in the world. Then one day my daughter introduced me to a new boyfriend. He was about as nice a guy as you would ever hope your daughter would bring home. He was African-American. It was then I found I indeed did have a problem. I banned her from dating him. That is not a good thing to do with a 16-year-old, but I could not help it. I spent days meeting with my priest, discussing it with a counselor, then went back and swallowed hard. I told my daughter I would no longer prohibit their dating. I explained that I would never be able to fully accept it, but I would not forbid it. I made this young man welcome in my home, we sat and talked about many things. I promise I was able to get him to feel comfortable around us. Time passed by and they stayed together. One day, at his house, I was talking to his single mom. I could tell she was uncomfortable with me there. Finally I asked her how she felt about his dating a white girl, and she poured out to me that my daughter was the most wonderful person in the entire world, a real treasure ... “but she is not black. I am sorry, I am old-fashioned I guess, but I am not happy with my son dating a white girl.” We both laughed when I told her I felt the same. They went off to college, drifted apart and are now both dating someone of their own race. The problem is not with the girl (in your column) (wapo.st/XhUjce), nor was it with my daughter or her boyfriend; it is with a generation of us still holding on with all we have to what we were raised to believe. I hope they can forgive us. — M. On an expectant mother’s weight gain (not that it’s even remotely your business): I’m a midwife and it seems I spend all day talking people off ledges about their weight. We make people so self-conscious about it, having them weigh in at every prenatal visit. Volumes have been written on “appropriate weight gain in pregnancy.” So much of what goes on in that nine-month period is beyond the mom-to-be’s control. Then add to that people at every turn saying things like, “You’re only six months? Are you sure the doctor didn’t make a mistake with your due date?” Or, “Are you still pregnant?” And my personal favorite, “Are you sure it’s not twins?” It makes pregnant women dread leaving their homes. Get a clue, people. You are not funny. Not at all, not even a little bit. If you can’t say “you look great” then don’t say anything at all. — Wanting to Throw the Scale Out in Illinois On figuring out what to do with knowledge of someone’s infidelity: My life works better when I don’t judge. Raising Our Children The Happily Mixed Up Way!
The importance of blended families banding together when it comes to raising our children is HUGE. Growing up I have seen first hand how a child of mixed race struggled with his identity, because of the environment he was raised in, by the time he reached his late teens he'd made a choice to reject half of what he was instead of embracing all. He did not have the right support system, and there were no families made up like his own within his community, or maybe there were but his parents just didn't know where to find them.

Some People Actually Think Bi-Racial Children Are A FAD?
I heard the strangest story a couple of days ago, a friend of mine was at the park with her child and a women approached and complimented on how beautiful her child was (child's biracial - blk mom-wht dad) She asked if they were planning on having more children and went on to explain why they should by adding because interracial children are so beautiful and that it's in vogue now to have an interracial child. WOW! How would you respond to that comment?

Where Are The Black Women & White Men?
Everytime I go to the stores my interracial couple/family radar kicks on. I get excited when I see a blended couple or even better a beautifully blended family out and about. I immediately dig through my wallet for an invite card to the Happily Mixed Up Community and hand it to them. But for some reason today I noticed something interesting when I handed out three cards to three interracial couples, it was that all three were Black Men with White or Latin Women. Here on Long Island I see more Blk Men with Wht Women than any other interracial couple make up. Now I know there are interracial couples made up of Blk Women & Wht Men because I'm one of them and I personally know of three other couples. But I ask where are the rest? I have yet to see more Blk Women with Wht Men. If you're out there please say hello!

Why are Meds pushed on our children in school?
Why is it in some schools that the Special Ed Dept/Committee insist on pushing Meds on students? It's painful and difficult enough having to deal with the fact that your child has a disability like ADD or ADHD, but then you have so many others like parents, school officials, teachers telling you what you should or should not do with your child or who you should or should not listen to when it comes to your child. It seems that they start pushing meds on kids at such a young age 4-5 years old. The schools do not want to give a child a chance. If a child is a little out of line, or not like the majority of their peers, then there has to be something wrong and you as a parent should look into meds. I know every child is different and in some cases yes meds are needed, but man it seems like every other child mostly boys are on some kind of medication at an age that is too young. What's Going On!!!!! I support the Special Education Department and respect the Teachers that take on those jobs. I know that they are difficult and require a tremendous amount of patience. When I was growing up the way my parents and many others dealt with us when we got out of line was a spanking or a smack. And let me tell you, a smack at a young age is a lot easier to remember than a time out and therefore most kids try harder not to make the same mistake twice. Now a days it's frowned upon to disipline your child that way, you can go to jail and be labeled a negligent child abuser. Of course there are those parents out there that should be in jail for the excessive harm they impose on their children. I do not approve of punching or kicking your child that's crazy. Today the alternative to a smack/spanking that some doctors, schools and even parents have for dealing with difficult children is to medicate them. Again I feel that kids are not given a chance, each child develops at his or her own pace. The pressures put on the child and the parent are ridiculous.

DIVORCE IS NOT AN OPTION!
You know I've been reading this a lot lately and it's rarely the cheating spouse saying "Divorce is not an option" it always seems to be the victim in the relationship. LOL! I strongly disagree. Divorce is always an option, especially if your partner is inconsiderate & selfish. In my opinion it's ok to forgive once, but any more than that and you're new personal career title is door mat. People will do to you what you allow and take it as far as they can go. In the end the tears they shed are not for you or the love you shared, but for themselves for getting caught. If I'm wrong... call me out.

MARRIAGE - CHILDREN - FINANCES
Everyone and anyone who has all three (Marriage, Children & Finances) realizes that they all have there challenges. You meet someone cool and enjoy being around them, you two love each other so much that the next natural step would be to get married:-) Marriage is awesome it's actually an extension of dating but now you legally get to play house:-) all fun. Next step if you are both on the same page is children - now I didn't say finances because it is ridiculous to wait and save for having children, you will see right away that you can never have enough money for children unless you are independently wealthy and even then children do not understand the value of money or the power it has, thats something they eventually learn from the parent. All children want is your love, time and attention, so please if possible don't wait (but also don't be stupid/selfish you need to have some form of legitimate income and I do not mean government assistance) because children are beautiful, fun and enhance your life in such a wonderful way it can not be explained, it must be experienced. So children come on board and it's all gravy and everything you both wanted........well not exactly. That page you both were on starts to tear. What happens is a major disconnect. When the babies start coming everything changes, along with the lack of experience and learning involved comes tiredness, not enough time, financial strains, misunderstandings and non-communication which can lead to other situations that negatively breakdown the foundation that was built up to this point. For the man - his wife is no longer desirable, shes always tired or cranky (bitchy), he feels neglected, forgotten and unappreciated. For the women - her husband does not help enough, he's non-sympathetic, does not look at her the way he use to, courting has ceased to exist, no more compliments, she feels neglected, lonely and unattractive. Now remember, everything up until this point is what they both wanted and love their offspring dearly, the children are not the problem and never will be. So I ask this of the community, what should be the next step for this couple? counseling? what if things have gotten to the point of disresptectful, embarrassing behavior, humiliating verbal exchanges or just plain co-existing under the same roof like roommates. Do they have a chance? is it better to just cut your loses and realize that you've grown apart in different directions and may want different things even though it hasn't been said? is it possible to fall out of love with someone so quickly? Biggest and most important question, do you stay together for the sake of the children? Waiting for your responses.

THE SEVEN BIGGEST ECONOMIC LIES
The President’s Jobs Bill doesn’t have a chance in Congress — and the Occupiers on Wall Street and elsewhere can’t become a national movement for a more equitable society – unless more Americans know the truth about the economy. Here’s a short (2 minute 30 second) effort to rebut the seven biggest whoppers now being told by those who want to take America backwards. The major points: 1. Tax cuts for the rich trickle down to everyone else. Baloney. Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush both sliced taxes on the rich and what happened? Most Americans’ wages (measured by the real median wage) began flattening under Reagan and have dropped since George W. Bush. Trickle-down economics is a cruel joke. 2. Higher taxes on the rich would hurt the economy and slow job growth. False. From the end of World War II until 1981, the richest Americans faced a top marginal tax rate of 70 percent or above. Under Dwight Eisenhower it was 91 percent. Even after all deductions and credits, the top taxes on the very rich were far higher than they’ve been since. Yet the economy grew faster during those years than it has since. (Don’t believe small businesses would be hurt by a higher marginal tax; fewer than 2 percent of small business owners are in the highest tax bracket.) 3. Shrinking government generates more jobs. Wrong again. It means fewer government workers – everyone from teachers, fire fighters, police officers, and social workers at the state and local levels to safety inspectors and military personnel at the federal. And fewer government contractors, who would employ fewer private-sector workers. According to Moody’s economist Mark Zandi (a campaign advisor to John McCain), the $61 billion in spending cuts proposed by the House GOP will cost the economy 700,000 jobs this year and next. 4. Cutting the budget deficit now is more important than boosting the economy. Untrue. With so many Americans out of work, budget cuts now will shrink the economy. They’ll increase unemployment and reduce tax revenues. That will worsen the ratio of the debt to the total economy. The first priority must be getting jobs and growth back by boosting the economy. Only then, when jobs and growth are returning vigorously, should we turn to cutting the deficit. 5. Medicare and Medicaid are the major drivers of budget deficits. Wrong. Medicare and Medicaid spending is rising quickly, to be sure. But that’s because the nation’s health-care costs are rising so fast. One of the best ways of slowing these costs is to use Medicare and Medicaid’s bargaining power over drug companies and hospitals to reduce costs, and to move from a fee-for-service system to a fee-for-healthy outcomes system. And since Medicare has far lower administrative costs than private health insurers, we should make Medicare available to everyone. 6. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. Don’t believe it. Social Security is solvent for the next 26 years. It could be solvent for the next century if we raised the ceiling on income subject to the Social Security payroll tax. That ceiling is now $106,800. 7. It’s unfair that lower-income Americans don’t pay income tax. Wrong. There’s nothing unfair about it. Lower-income Americans pay out a larger share of their paychecks in payroll taxes, sales taxes, user fees, and tolls than everyone else. Demagogues through history have known that big lies, repeated often enough, start being believed — unless they’re rebutted. These seven economic whoppers are just plain wrong. Make sure you know the truth – and spread it on. Quoted from http://robertreich.org/post/11329289033

ECONOMIC REVOLUTION!! is a Nationwide Boycott of the Fortune 500 & Banks the Ans
ECONOMIC REVOLUTION!! is a Nationwide Boycott of the Fortune 500 & Banks the Answer? In the past revolution for change was never nice, it was scary, bloody & violent to say the least. Today, at least in the U.S. it doesn't have to be that way at all. It has been said numerous times that the 1% or so called wealthy are so far removed from what is going on with the other 99% that they do not care. It doesn't affect them, that they are in their own little world. It has also been stated that the only way you hurt the rich is in their pocket!! Expempting the professions of teachers, police officers, nurses, doctors, fighter fighters. Heres a question: Do you think a National (I mean every state & citizen other than those exempted) Boycott/ Sitout of Fortune 500 Corporations, e.i. pharmarceutical, banks, insurance carriers etc. meaning all the little people that process paperwork and are really struggling to make it were to walk out and decide not to go to work for how ever long it takes to get result and what they want. Do you think that the top 1% would hear us 99% then? Tell the community what you think?

Never Underestimate the Power of Regular Americans When They Join Together.
"How Can Middle-Class Americans Influence Public Policy, Espescially at a Time When CEOs and Corps. Have Great Political Influence? Never underestimate the power of regular Americans when they join together, when they're organized and mobilized to seek change. Money at the top can only go so far. Politicians don't only respond to campiagn contributions. They also respond to their constituents when those constituents are energized and mobilized. That means that average working people and retirees should do even more now to become politically effective. Anyhting is doable if enough people want it to happen. Our greates danger is broad based cynicism. If people believe nothing is possible then nothing is possible. A Social Contract Is One of The Foundations of The American Political System
A Social Contract - The following is being quoted from Paul Krugman He wrote: A Social Contract Is One of The Foundations of The American Political System. It is the understanding that government is created by the people to serve the needs of the people. It is rooted in the ideas of three major thinkers: Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Krugman says that we are entering into class warfare. They argue that those who want the wealthiest Americans to carry a greater share of the tax burden are declaring war on the rich. Krugman countered by arguing that the real class warfare results not from asking more from the wealthiest, but from a tax structure that exempts the privilaged few from the social contract that applies to everyone else. A social contract intrinsically implies both equal opportunity and equal responsibilty.

From Robert Reich Former Secretary of Labor Under Bill Clinton
Interview quoted from November 2011 issue of NYSUT United. Question:" What are the things president Obama needs to do to get the country back o the right track?........ REICH: For the long-term unemployed he's got to ressurect the works Progress Administration (WPA) and the civilian Conservation Corp., which hired people directly to rebuild America. Beyond that, we need at least half a trillion dollars in infrastructure spending. We need to upgrade and repair public schools and the federal government needs to make interest-free loans to the state governments so they can reverse the tragic direction states and localities have been going in terms of firing teachers, firefighters, police officers, social workers and others whose work is so important to average working families. At times like these they are the last who should be fired."
